the “this people” of 1 Cor. 14:21). This is demonstrated by verse 21 where the background for the pronouncement of verse 22 is found in the Old Testament. Probably the passage which Paul had in mind was Isaiah 28:11–12. That there was a large number of Jews in Corinth is made evident by a simple reading of Acts 18:1–17, which contains the history of the founding of the church at Corinth. It is also clear from the Acts of the Apostles that whenever the gift of tongues was exercised Jews were present.
